The sad thing is that, with the ten years that Waterson did C&H, plus the ten years that Breathed did Bloom County (his further works are irrelevant), plus the 15 or so years that gary did this lovely comic, combined, provided the syndicates that produced them significantly less than they’ve made on any ONE of Blondie, Family Circle, Beetle Bailey, or especially Garfield. Fucking Garfield! The lesson is that if you make something brilliant, and move on when you’ve said what you have to say, you are less valuable than the schmuck who cranks out the same shit for 70-80 years.
