    Huh, it looks like it was walled at some time, then either the wall was taken down, or the city expanded beyond it (uniformly?). Weird.

    I’m guessing there is a regulation banning construction of many-storied buildings past a certain zoning line.

    Oop, figured it out. Walled city was ancient Chinese military fort. The Chinese said that they would reclaim it, so squatters arrived, knowing that no one would purchase property where they knew the Chinese government would take over when they regained Hong Kong. Squatters turned into low-lifes which turned into the Triad gangs. In 1993 the government forceably evicted everyone and tore the place down. Tax incentive plans were set up for construction within the confines of the area for urban revitalization purposes, which is why the construction is so thoroughly square.

    I am currently writing an essay for “Scroope”, the Cambridge University journal for the Architecture Department.

    In my essay I make a reference to the Kowloon Walled City (as an extreme example of dense urbanization).
