“This is your brain on anime”
Probably one of the best animated or non-animated films of the decade. The soundtrack alone is worth watching for. Directed by Satoshi Kon, Sony Classics gave it the full treatment and it shows. I’d loved to have seen this in theaters. The original Japanese novel was released in Marie Claire back in 1991.
After watching this, I found a lot of parallels between this movie and “The Cell” however, Paprika is both much brighter and much darker than The Cell and has much deeper character development.
Aww yeah, it was everything I want from an animated film. Colour, music, absurdism. Molto molto bene signore. I didn’t know there was a novel though, we’ll see if it’s as good as the film.
One of the trippiest deepest movies I have ever seen. Beautiful anime too.
wasn’t ‘the cell’ about a serial killer that was in a coma, and they had to go inside his head to find out where his last victim was hidden?
really? this is like that?
There are enough parallels to pique your interest:
Female main character that’s a psychotherapist
Use of technology to explore dreams
Cop supporting character that gets pulled into main plot
Quest to catch a major criminal
Odd twist to the plot
Bizarre imagery in dreams
Both directed by people that don’t have a lot of movies under their belt but make amazing movies regardless.
Just my 2 cents.
This was awesome. MOvie put me in a damn trance
I fucking loved this movie. I should watch it again. And again.
Satoshi Kon’s work is the GREATEST! Paprika was brilliant and beautiful
Not to mention the soundtrack is utterly amazing technopop used in ways that no one else can. Susumu Hirasawa is a genius.
