Basically, I tried to make a picture of what I imagine the cross-section of a joint to be: something like interlocking hooks.
The sections are essentially cones. When collapsed, they are loose. When extended, the conical parts of the rings seal. These things have been around for decades.

How do the joints not leak?
They’re watertight.

Yeah, they taper so when extended they seal against each other.
I used to have a metal one I got with some garage sale camping gear, worked great but it’s a pain in the ass to clean.
