Nice idea, but ultimately – fail. He’s the Reaper, so he’s got a scythe, to sever the soul from the body. A machine gun would be useless for that task.
“WHAT CAN THE HARVEST HOPE FOR,
IF NOT FOR THE CARE OF THE REAPER MAN?”
One stalk,
one swing.
That’s how it’s done.
Death is a fixed concept. What happens after is all in the flux of belief and uncertainty, but no matter the story, no matter the culture, everyone has a one on one with The Reaper Man. All the different stories reflect different perceptions of the same thing. However, there is no better metaphor for his equipment than the scythe. Anything with an edge might seem appropriate, but we must stick with harvesting tools to properly express the nature of the transition, and unless you think a hand sickle or two is less threatening, I’d say the scythe remains the “correct” choice.
If someone pointed a machine gun at my head I would at least know what was happening. If someone came running at me with a scythe I would shit myself as much as is humanly possible.
Tell me you are too badass to be more afraid of a scythe than a gun.
Death: The 21st Century
His work is never done. Especially on the modern war field.

It’s a metaphor, it doesn’t have to be accurate. Besides your description is only valid for one of many tales surrounding this character.
