Yes I guessed that that’s what they’re for but I thought they had a specific name. It’s interesting how they put the masks on only when fighting against several people.
Next to the Kabuto (Japanese Helmet), one of the most expressive parts of the Samurai’s Armor is the Face Mask.
This “armor for the face” is known by many names: “mengu” “menpo” “mempo” “men yoroi” “katchu men”. Menpo meaning “face and cheek” and is generally used for masks with nose pieces.
A general classification can be made:
“Happuri” A whole face mask with center opening for the nose eyes and mouth, maybe only “legend”
“Hoate” The mask protects only the cheeks.
“Somen” (Entire Face) A mask covering the entire face.
“Me no shita men”, generally known as “Menpo” or “Mempo” A half mask covering the face below the eyes including the nose.
Sorry Puulaahi, the’re NOT samurais! Not skinny, Not gay like, Not belly showing berrant purple clothing, Not emo hair? Or most of the mid-90s to date animes are wrong???
I’ve been to Portugal but I can’t say a whole lot, shame on me. I will learn it sooner or later.
Obrigado, although that photo is heavily edited. Only few places in Austria look like that. My parents aren’t Austrian, I was just born here. Austria is only nice if you’re interested in history, there are far more beautiful places in Europe. Like Spain, Portugal and Italy.
Yes, these are authentic samurai photos. However, at the time of these photos in the mid 1800s, the samurai had been at peace for over 250 years. The last great period of warfare among the samurai was during the Sengoku or warring States Period in the 16th century. So the first guy who looks like a “stone-cold bad ass” is probably just a soft bureaucrat who has never pulled his sword on another human in his life.
I thought most of these photos were from the late 1800’s when the samurai class was destroyed for modern Japan to pave the way. These guys were still badass. Ceremonial sword etc Samurai stuff is insanely badass. The discipline and work it takes to accomplish these ceremonial acts that are 1000’s of years old took so much work. I am training in Samurai/Ninja stuff through my martial art and the attention to detail is just nuts. Being American we are more lax, but my sensei has shown us some of the sword work for 2nd degree black belt and there are literally 1000’s of ways to wipe the blood off of your sword, draw and insert your sword back into the scabbard.
Who was the other person here that was training in Bujinkan Ninjutsu?
The guy in the first one looks pretty fly. Also what are those masks called. It’s supposed to represent some god or demon right. Or spirit maybe?
To strike fear and hide their emotions during battle. Wouldn’t be surprised if some of them represent Shinto Gods.

The first one is my favorite. You can just tell that he is a stone cold badass.

Dude, what. I could make a stupid comment about Brazilians now but then again, I’m not xenophobic like you.
Ok, me first… Brazil only have black poor people, carnaval, corruption and monkeys! You turn. No wait…
Ops, “No, wait…”
I love Capoeira, Samba and the Portuguese language. Like this, yeah?
Much better! Do you like portuguese language? Know how to say something?

Next time you need an help with portuguese or make a trip to Brazil, already have a tourism guide!
Nice I appreciated it, hehe. I have never left Europe though so it will take a while until I make it to Brazil.
Err, I appreciate it*
Ok, that’s a deal. Hope my wife don’t kill me!

You don’t have to kill people to be badass. (:
true but willing or capable to do so IS badass…like toshogu said, these guys probably were just doing something ceremonial
these 19th century samurai couldn’t come close to the lethality of a true Sengoku or Kamakura Shogunate
