Schells brewery is in New Ulm, MN; I’ve been there a couple of times.
They used to make “Pete’s Wicked Ale” (and it is, god did I get tanked off that stuff, yum), and “1919” Root Beer which is only sold by the keg, is excellent, and costs more than beer.
There’s not much to see in a visit to New Ulm, but a road trip to see the brewery is one of them. Very affordable tour, and cute little town. I’d recommend the Beyer house (www.beyerhaus.com/) as very nice bed and breakfast for the money. My (now) fiance and I went there last Valentines Day. It was a good time.
Words of caution: (1) there is no truly upscale restaurants in the town. Although there is a steak place, it is a blue jeans style steak place. and (2) Nothing is open on Sunday mornings. It’s one of those midwestern towns where pretty much everyone goes to church (either Lutheran or Catholic) and no one bothers to open a store for the few who don’t.
w00t Minnesota! (though Surly is better 😉 )
