Akira Kurosawa dies, RIP, and now the Japanese don’t have any contemporary film makers to display the great virtues of their culture … at least we Americans have Michael Bay … and Scorsese …
There were more famous directors back then than Kurosawa. Look up Kihachi Okamoto( Kill!, Sword of Doom), Masaki Kobayashi(Harakiri, Samurai Rebellion). I love Chambara films!
As for Japanese directors TODAY: John Woo(His original nonAmerican work kicks ass, in fact Michael Bay would be out of a job if it wasn’t for Woo), Miyazaki Hayao , Takashi Miike, Kitano Takeshi, Yamada Yoji, Mamoru Oshii… ETC.
In fact do yourself a favor and watch a movie called TOKYO! (2008). So much talent coming from Japan right now. I need to visit Japan and train. Get my ass kicked and visit historic temples, castles, food, shops etc. Japan where tradition, discipline and respect of old live with the newest technology and craziest of pop culture.
I am aware there are many other fine Japanese directors out there, Kurosawa is just kinda my gold standard. Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Kagemusha and my favorite Yojimbo have had massive influence across all kinds of boundaries.
Plus John Woo is a Chinese director, but still an amazing one,I am really looking forward to seeing his new epic Red Cliff, hope I can get my hands on the five hour version of the film. And it is hard to beat Hard Boiled.
My favorite “recent” movie from Asian cinema is the Chan-wook Park Korean film Oldboy, I can not get enough of that film. There is a fight scene with a claw hammer that will go down in history as one of the most kickass things ever to be seen on a TV.
Addendum: I was mostly kidding about Bay, although he can be a guilty pleasure. Martin Scorsese is my favorite working director today though.
One I recently watched as Big Man Japan. After that I decided to lay off Japanese cinema for 2 months to recover. Hitoshi Matsumoto can chew on a horse’s asshole for all I care.
I take it you haven’t been following Takashi Miike’s career. Not saying he is displaying great virtues or anything, but he is certainly putting a lot on display.
Gotta love the Gifted program in KC-
I watched that epic in fucking fourth grade, in class.
Decapitations, ritual disemboweling, and lines like:
“Listen to me, you whore-gutted, pock-marked, motherless scum… I need a favor.”
gods bless public education.

Oh, I get it! Japan used to be full of men. Now it is just all women, or as they call them, Gaysha!

Trooth. Funny too.
lol im gonna suppose the “trooth” part was insincere.
Aren’t the eyes supposed to be alot bigger?
Japan went all Emo.
Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai are my heroes.
Clearly this was caused by radiation.
We feared mutants and Godzilla would be caused by the bombs… instead it made them all emo perverts.
Huh, how far is California from Los Alamos again?
Actually they were always perverts. The emo scene-kuns is a more recent development…

Japan has run out of testosterone, and America will too if the Emos keep multiplying…
I don’t get what people are complaining about. I would do any of those chicks on the right.
