Uh, yeah – carrots are the domesticated version of a plant called “Queen Anne’s Lace”, which if you dig up and cut the root of, you’ll find that it is extremely carrot-smelling and slightly orange but mostly it’s just woody and inedible (unless you are *very* hungry). Thank you, Boy Scout training.
Yeah there’s tons of Queen Anne’s Lace in my parents’ yard. In my experience the roots are always white and smell very strongly like carrot even without cutting them up. I don’t think they’re edible though.
