I don’t the caption on the Verdun picture is accurate. The background appears to be a large lake or ocean with a destroyer close in. The helmets look wrong, as well. On first glance, I’d say it’s a picture from World War II, or possibly Korea.
My bad; you’re correct. It should have been labeled:
Recapturing Luzon, 1945
The U.S. considered the Philippines strategically vital to the Pacific War, and Gen. Douglas MacArthur pushed incessantly to take it back after being forced out by the Japanese in 1942. He got his wish, and in early 1945, the Battle of Luzon was fought. There were 300,000 casualties, overwhelmingly Japanese, including tens of thousands from illness and fever.
My paternal grandfather arrived in Normandy a day after D-Day. He was in the signal corps. I just now realized that would be considered telecommunications so its kind of like I’m following in his footsteps. Except without the war part.
The man I consider my maternal grandfather was in the Battle of the Bulge. He also has tinkered with electronics and especially radios and computers, his whole life.
Why did I try to be an artist or a musician? Its like I was destined to do this. Except for the war part.
Except Antietum was far worse than Gettysburg, and I’d wager to say most battles in WWI far outweighed any WWII battle in casualties, but I suppose it’s all context.
