There were recent reprints (maybe around 2002, 2003) but the comics were published in the States in the mid 80s by First Comics, with introductions and covers by Frank Miller for the first year, then Bill Sienkiewicz for the second, and I forget who did them after that. Not much in the way of dialogue, but the comics were incredible. I just saw the first film recently. Not bad, but I prefer the comics.
28 volumes in the re-release rattybad mentions. I remember reading them, one a month, during their release from Dark Horse during that period. Amazing series; I can still remember the anticipation as I read Vol 28 (The Lotus Throne) and moved towards that ending. Man, that was a great read. Well, well worth the time and money.
Sidebar: LW&C made an appearance on Cartoon Network’s SAMURAI JACK as well. Jack, as a child (in a flashback) is playing along the river; I remember watching it and thinking “man, it would be cool if…” and then I heard the squeaky wheels and, sure enough, there he was. The incident was the initial reason Jack picked up the sword, so to speak.
Sword of Vengeance, the first movie re-named Shogun Assassin for the American release, was pretty good. I am still trying to find the fifth and sixth movie for a reasonable price.
Baby cart on the river styx.
Good flick
Comics …. you have read the comics.
This from Shogun Assassin. Are there comics? This is one of the greatest films made by man… On par with Seven Samurai, etc… Awesome!

The Samurai Jack episode you mention was the best cameo idea ever.
Didn’t matter if you knew who they were but it made that scene just that much cooler when you recognized them.
