I\’m entering my band in a Blues competition and was wondering what kind of blues you guys and dolls listen to or think would kick ass to hear in concert.
I wanna win and hope you can help your MCS bro out with some suggestions!
absolutely Stevie Ray Vaughn… I would go with Texas Flood for obvious reasons, but for a more ambiguous reason, it was the first song I heard when my grandma died. Talk about a flood of emotions.
also, this song is hard as shit to play. (unless you really are a badass)
i always like the bands that take some unexpected song. that’s not necessarily blues.
i.e. depeche mode personal jesus.
turn something well known like that and turn it into a good blues song.
If you want something that kicks ass and would get you a decent spot in a competition, try some fast SRV numbers, eg. Rude Mood or maybe Texas Flood. Check Kenny Wayne Shepherd out too, I’d say Electric Lullaby would be great for a comp.
Maybe some Joe Bonamassa, if you prefer something more modern?
Also, I’d say throw in an original song or two in there. It’s rather easy to come up with a blues song/instrumental. That is, if you actually feel the music you play. Remember: it’s all about feeling, technique and “originality” isnt as important. That’s what makes blues unique. You can repeat the same riff over and over and make it sound different each time around.
(Take a good look at B.B King if you dont know what i’m talking about. Stylish repetition is the term, I believe)
That is a beautiful quilt top you have on that guitar. What is that you are shredding on?

Early Fleetwood Mac from the Peter Green era, Elmore James, Howlin’ Wolf, Savoy Brown. Don’t try to crowd in a lot of notes. Just put a lot of feeling in the ones you do play and you’ll be fine.
Look into John Hammond. You look like you know nothing of the blues, whether it be the pain or the history, and if you come here looking for inspiration, you are probably beyond help. John Hammond may be your last hope, as he started off a white outsider too.
Muddy Waters.
Nina Simone.
Cab Calloway.
With the exception of Paul and a couple others, shame on most of you.
Fleetwood Mac. Blues Traveller. Rolling Stones. The Doors. Fuck. Why don’t you just throw Megadeth and NKOTB in while you’re at it?
Albert Collins – I Ain’t Drunk.
Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials – Chicken, Gravy & Biscuits.
Little Charlie & The Nightcats – My Last Meal (If you want a funny blues tune.)
Papa Chubby – Sweet Goddess of Love & Beer.
Anything by SRV.
Lonnie Mack p- Natural Disaster. (Great riff.)
Blind Willie McTell
Huddie William Ledbetter (“Leadbelly”)
Eddie James “Son” House, Jr.
I second that, Paul knows what he’s talking about.
Also, good luck.

I’m a fan of the Bob Dylan/Johnny Cash sessions from 1969 myself.
Something from Black Snake Moan. But I, unlike wookie, have no idea what’s any good.
Deep Purple are the best bloody blues funking geezers.
Old Fleetwood Mac maybe?
BTW you’re cute.
B. B. King
Blueshammer!
reboot wins this thread.

Entering your band in a “blues competition” is automatic FAIL.
You might as well kick Robert Johnson in the taint.

Just bring one guitar and a lot of pain.
ted wtf are you doin!
John Lee Hooker, Blues Traveler if you got the wind pipes, and some good ol’ Muddy Waters.
Fellow bluesman here.

an irish man, singing the blues, about too much alcohol:

Welcome to the family.
I see you rockin that powah chord thar!
Some of the best blues of my personal taste is VERY early rolling stones and the doors.
I know. Probably not what you were getting at but People Are Strange NEVER fails to go down well.

@garbledxmission: Fleetwood Mac meets your lamelist? You must have seriously missed the awesomeness that is Then Play On.
BTW, good luck, Skeeter. Hope you do well.
Please just never do a cover of Mustang Sally and you will be ok in my book.
Don’t have any suggestions cause I don’t listen to blues, but good luck man!
I can tell based on this picture alone that your band will WIN THE COMPETITION.
Also I support old roommates unconditionally.
