Well yeah, the Latin word for black is ‘niger.’ Considering how many languages are based on Latin, or have Latin components, this is pretty well known.
Actually these are not only Hungarian. We have them here is Bosnia as well. The guy in the picture is a chimney sweep. Their motto is that these candies (usually in mint flavor)is the chimney sweep of your throat. And he is black with soot not as a result of a million years of evolution. I actually quite like them.
Reporting in from hungary: it is:)
Győri is the manufacturer, the labels say: Classic candy with filling, original negro:)
it’s quite famous too.
Theres a black guy in the background planting it.
It’s not racist at all.
Black guy?
You mean the shadowed outline of the white guy with the shovel?
they’re . . . cotton-y delicious?
Does anyone else here realize that the word Negro is only racist in the Americas? In many other languages, CRAYONS have “Negro” on them 😛

The guy in the background is a chimney-sweep, not a black guy. (See here for a better view.)
Besides, the hungarian word for a black person is not “negro”, but “néger” (pronounced very much like the American “nigger”, though not derogatory at all); it’s just called Negro because it is black anis candy…
