{That being said, Lucas’s argument for tweaking that scene was that he didn’t want Han to shoot Greedo “in cold blood”. This is what I’m not clear on: If someone has a gun already drawn on you, and you shoot him, how is that in cold blood?} <-genuine question
Actually, firearms in Star Wars have a “stun setting” that is entirely non-lethal.
My own concern is that given the initial “cold blooded” Han, there is a clear growth of character throughout the movie which is abrogated by the reworking of the scene.
@Sabersmith: I dunno…’stunning’ Greedo (I keep wanting to say “Guido”) would only create a future scenario with an extremely-pissed-off Greedo waiting for Han when he returned to Jabba to pay off his debt –one that wouldn’t bother with small talk before he drew & pulled the trigger. Most gun-folk I’ve talked to say that you always shoot to kill (with exceptions, of course –like if you’re a stormtrooper shooting at a princess and Darth Vader’s told you specifically “I want her alive!”)
Although I totally agree with you about the character-development arc getting screwed up.
I agree completely that he shouldn’t have used stun (I mean it WAS greedo after all…). I was trying to point out options that Lucas had which would have altered the film less.
A side note of interest is that none of the “good guys” ever used stun.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that. Part of the fantasy of being a “good guy” is dehumanizing your enemy to the point where you get to kill them with impunity. Nazis, vampires, zombies, Reavers, stormtroopers, etc, etc.
Remember how Timothy McVeigh described the people working in the Murrah Federal Building that he bombed?
BlasTech Industries DL-44 heavy blaster pistol
Outlawed throughout the Empire.
It found some use by terrorists cells of the Rebel Alliance on account of its ability to consistently penetrate stormtrooper armor.
The DL-44 was sometimes used by Kyle Katarn and to a greater degree his students, Jaden Korr, and Rosh Penin, even though they all followed the teachings of the Jedi and wielded lightsabers. Han Solo and Mara Jade were among the many smugglers and bounty hunters who wielded modified DL-44 blasters.
Merr-Sonn Munitions, Inc’s imitations of the DL-44 included the Flash 4 and Power 5.
The DL-44 did not have as fast a fire rate as the E-11 blaster rifle or FC-1 flechette launcher, but its accuracy was unmatched compared to these weapons.
It also sported a charge function, to increase the level of armor piercing the blasts were capable of. Also featured were a motion sensitive scope and efficient galven circuitry that allowed the pistol to deal more damage without draining additional energy.
As a side effect, however, it had a somewhat slow rate of fire and used about 4 times as much energy as a standard blaster, exhausting its power pack in about 25 shots. It weighed about 1.3 kg. A unique feature of the DL-44 is the vibration system built into the handgrip. A small stud in the grip begins to pulse gently to alert the user that the weapon’s remaining energy is sufficient for five shots or fewer.
And say what you will about RotJ and all the Ewok bullshit…one of my favorite visuals is Han picking off stormtroopers from the bunker entrance –especially the one he shoots in the face (yeah, I know…I’m a sick fuck.)
If Greedo is after you, don’t give him a free shot! Shot the SOB!!

Yes, I am a Star Wars geek.

I always loved the sound it made.
