Stuff like this makes me sad that people try to ‘claim’ Lincoln for the modern Republican party.
The party ideals couldn’t be more different. Yeah, that’s obvious to anyone who studied the course of politics and history in the United States, but too many idiots have the “same name/same party” mentality, and try to absorb this brilliant, self-sacrificing man into a party that has become nothing but a vile pit of hate.
Somehow I just have a hard time seeing Lincoln hanging out with the likes of Rush Limbaugh & Sarah Palin.
@...Paul_Is_Drunk: I find that party names tend to have little relevance when applied from outside the era it is used. The general views and perspectives of each party has always changed from generation to generation, and so what we consider “Republican” views today are not necessarily the stances on issues that republicans would have believed back in Lincolns day…
Personally I find partisan politics pointless. No candidate ever completely embodies the view of one party or another. Nor do people, in general even think that way. There is always a significant percentage of people whose views cross the so called party lines.
So much so, that it seems like the only purpose for political parties is to ensure the loyalty of those blind enough to follow a label without actually knowing what it stands for. Sadly there are actually a lot of people who do that, which I think is kind of a shame…
I’ve always wondered what it would be like of we could vote on issues, rather than for people…
