Yea because Mario titles have so much competition from Sonic titles these days. Sorry, but I wouldn’t put my money on the mascot of the company that went from being one of the leaders in the great console wars of the late 90’s, to “third-party publisher” of titles in the 00’s.
Sonic will forever live in the shadow of the greatness that is Mario. Nuff said.
@...Tetsuo137: There are at least two reasons Sega fell from the Console kings, and neither of them are Nintendo.
First, they decided that it was better to design and manufacture add-ons to the Genesis instead of working on a new console. SEGA CD, and 32X, anyone?
Additionally, the Sega Saturn lost the hardware launch that SEGA was hoping for because of the release of Sony’s PlayStation. The PlayStation came out of left field and boasted disc-based games and cutting edge graphics.
With the failed Genesis expansions and the stunted launch of the Saturn, Sega lost a lot of money.
When they released the Dreamcast, it was by far a better console than any of the competition that came out nearly a year later. But Sega couldn’t afford the losses on manufacturing the consoles, so they decided to drop out of the console market.
So, there’s not much to your argument that Mario has beaten Sonic in any way, both in terms of games and as the mascot of a company.
The only reason Sonic has not done as well in 3D is that it’s hard to have a character who is the embodiment of speed, and expect to control his movements accurately in 3-dimensions. Mario is easy because he can’t do much more than waddle around and hop.

With Sega’s exit from manufacturing consoles, their games are now on virtually anything. I’ve been having fun playing Sonic on the PS3. Still no Mario… 😉
@...Denmarkian: We are all familiar with why Sega fell from greatness, but the heart of the matter is which character holds truer to gamers? Mario or Sonic?
Aside from the fact that Mario was basically the first character ever to be portrayed in a video game, he has also stood the test of time. No matter how many Sonics, Masterchiefs, Sypros, Samus, you throw at him he is still around.
I don’t seem to recall waddling around in Mario 64 when I had my wing cap on. The problem with Sonic is just that, he is the embodiment of speed, therefore the enviroments have to be built to suit him thus limiting what can really be done with him in video games. Mario on the otherhand is much more versatile: Give him a green shell and he can surf, winged hat enables flight, etc. There is a diversity to him.
Even though I have played and enjoyed Sonic titles, he is a one track character. Sonic has speed. Give him a ring and, oh look, more speed.
It’s no wonder that Mario was officially given the title of Most Prolific Video Game Character. But for the sake of it we could just call him the “Primus inter pares” and be done with it.
Meh, the Sonic games were boring and got worse, while the Mario games were boring, but have stayed steadily in their place as a mediocre game that appeals to my little sisters but makes me yawn and look wistfully out the window, then shake my head in a “wtf am i doing?” way, toss the controller and go play in the snow/rain/mud/dirt/grass/trees/lake/hornets nest/etc
Mario beats his ass any day, hands down.
I’m going to have to agree with Tetsuo on this one.
they should of stuck with the original concept in this one. Not force you to rescue a bunch of damn birds.
I actually enjoyed this game. It wasn’t exceptionally fun, JUST fun. ONLY JUST fun.
@...Azar:
Fucking birds.
I downloaded a ROM of this for my motorola Q, via some sega emulator. not bad really.
@...Tetsuo137: Sorry, but Mario only wishes he were half as cool and fun as Sonic. 8)

Or we could put it to a vote…. Mario VS Sonic
@...NoOneInParticular: Still no Mario? Unless Nintendo somehow crashes and burns overnight, I don’t think we will be seeing Mario on a Sony console.

dude, I TOTALLY had this game!
