I visited Carcassonne w/ my family when I was 12 or 13. I always thought it would be so cool to live in a walled city…it’s medieval.

The castle of Carcassonne has some good legends about sieges taking place there.
And when you visit the castle, it reveals traps made for make the life of attackers harder.

Carcassonne is actually a 19th century reconstruction of what 19th century French thought the early medieval walled city would have looked like. It is stunning, and fascinating, but bear in mind it’s not more medieval than Ivanhoe.
If you want to see the real shit, the fortified mountain of Peyrepetuse – about 50 miles away and much harder to get to, both by road and then from the car park.
