I’m not saying that Calvin and Hobbes is better than any other comic-strip… but it has had the biggest impact on my life. I read Calvin and Hobbes before I could read. The art was quite captivating; not many sunday strips had art that was so stimulating and so appealing.
Plenty of other comic-strips have been good… but Calvin and Hobbes made me want to be an artist, as Bill Watterson wasn’t merely a caroonist… he was one of the most brilliant artists of our time.
I started to avoid the comic section in the newspaper well over a decade ago, I think.
Once we lost Garfield, Peanuts, The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, and at least two others I’m forgetting, it was no longer worth it.
I took a peek a few months ago. I was shocked and appalled how horrible it had become. The one that stuck out the most was the overly ethnic African-American gangster kid…it scared the crap out of me. WTF kind of message does that send to kids today?
Get Fuzzy is the only good new comic strip i read. Beetle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible, BC, Wizard of Id, Hi and Lois are all pathetic horrible shells. Garfield kicked the can in the 90’s and Family Circus was never good.
@...twosticks:
I LOVE Lio, and its got that captivating art previously mentioned, and almost never actually have to be able to read it.
I like Non Sequitor when they’re doing some crazy ass story, like the girl with the skull, can’t remember her name. And the kids with the dinosaurs. That shit was cool.
Get Fuzzy is also good. I used to really like Dilbert. Boondocks is good. I used to like Iggy (WHY?)
But nothing lives up to Calvin and Hobbes. Nothing.
I love Calvin and Hobbes, have all the books at home!
Quite Possibly the greatest comic strip ever. Next to The Far Side.

@...Camiam321: I am saying that Calvin and Hobbes is better than any other comic strip. By far.
@...Kishi: yes. you’re right. why should i hide behind false pretenses of not wanting to tread on toes.
@...all you motherfuckers out there: your dogshit comics and sunday strips pale in comparison.
Mighty dope
It’s Calvin! Help!
Peanuts and Gasoline Alley ftw
Calvin and Hobbes, Doonesbury, nonsequitur and Far Side are my faves.

These days a kid like that would have a psych referral from the school so fast it would make your head spin. Medicated into compliance to boot.
All time favorites are Bloom County, followed by Far Side, then Calvin n Hobbes.
New favorites are Get Fuzzy, Boondocks, and Lio.

Pearls Before Swine is a pretty good comic, but agreed, nothing will EVER match Calvin and Hobbes.
Wow. This is one of those rare strings in which everyone agrees. Bill Watterson FTW
