Only Movie-Spidey uses the tiny hairs on his fingers/toes. Comic-Spidey uses a kind of static-cling-y force to stick to walls (it’s actually been disrupted by Electro before.) As long as *some* part of his body is touching the surface, he can stick to said surface.

In one of the comics he even comments to Mary Jane that EVERY surface on his body seems to have that ability. This elicits much fangirl giggling, I’m sure.
