Washington DC is one of the “must see” places in the United States. The Smithsonian and the monuments are incredible. Two days minimum- go for four to five days if at all possible.
or, live there. I’m in Northern VA, and i love it. 20 minutes to DC, under 3 hours to a few beaches, 45 min from the Shenendoah Mtns, 4.5 hrs to NYC.. great location. Also, the median income peaked over $100k a few years back. I’m doing my part to keep the average down :/
I had the pleasure of visiting the city in summer 2002 (yeah, just a little while after 9/11).
Security was tight enough to prevent us from seeing the White House up close (snapped a pic or two from about a mile away) or go inside the Capitol building.
We did, however, get to go inside the Supreme Court building and get close enough to see inside the main hall where the Nine Justices sit and hear cases. That was rather amazing.
Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam Memorial. Wow. Just wow. The Reflecting Pool was empty :(.
The Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetary, and touring the Senate Offices building rounded off our 5 day trip. Didn’t get to see my state’s senators (Boxer and Feinstein, I live in California), though.
Oh shit, and the Library of Congress. How could I forget that? Viewing Lincoln’s Death Mask, the Declaration of Independence (or perhaps a copy of it).
There’s a boatload of history and wonder there if anyone cares enough about this country to visit it.

The WWII memorial is spectacular as well.
