They forgot to list the other orginazations that also sponsored this ad, like Al Queda and the Klu Klux Klan.
Also, I didn’t know that public libraries had personal information. Oh, that’s right, those type of things are only decided by liberal progressives when it supports their agenda, my bad.
@gor
if libraries don’t have personal information, then why does the Patriot Act need to give the government the right to search library records? I guess only liberal progressives (was that meant as an insult?) need to worry it, because dumb hicks don’t read.
Yes it was an insult, good of you to catch it. The constitutional protection is for “personal” papers in the home (or such as a car) NOT in a PUBLIC library. But I guess it’s more important that PUBLIC library information is more important that saving the lives of children. (I using the progressive’s normal reasoning for all their issues in my argument, isn’t that cute?)
I was checking whether that was an insult because liberal (deriving from the latin for ‘free’) and progressive (progress is good) are both characteristics that I’m proud of.
and Left is “sinister” in latin, what’s your point?
Since we have so many whacked-out federal court judge I don’t doubt stupid decisions. Stupid judges make stupid decisions alot, like giving children to proven child molesters and making illegal the Pledge of Allegience. Hell, the US Supreme Court said that the local government can seize your home and give it developers (where’s your protection there?).
Also, since the great evil threat of protecting our children by not allowing public library records to be reviewed was overturned than the system worked and liberty saved.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
By nature, libraries don’t keep records of who has checked out a book after the book has been returned, which does cause some ire on our end, but the keeping of records goes against the philosophy of the library. It’s open information for everyone; honestly, I could care less about what stuff you are looking up and your reasons for it, for the most part I am happy you are exercizing your natural right to think freely.
If the Feds came to my library today we could not tell them who checked out what, since we don’t even keep track of that stuff via a computer system or anything. You request it, we bring it to you then we take it back when you are done. Of course, I work in a special collections library, but when I worked for a regular library the same thing applied. Maybe circulation system administrator has access to records, but the librarians at the circulation desk doesn’t.
And for the record, the ALA was against the Patriot Act.
“I don’t have a problem discussing politics with anyone who is rational”
The people who label themselves liberal and/progressive, the only ones they consider “rational” are the ones that better agree with everything they say. No opposing views will be tolerated (and here I thought tolerance was accepted by “free” and “good” people, oh that’s right, tolerance is only for their views, again, my bad.)
@gor
Your views are being tolerated. You are not being censored or arrested. You’re just stupid and haven’t contributed any logic or evidence to this conversation.
Also you’ve tried to change the topic twice when it was manifest that you’d lost the argument.
Negative reboot, I was commenting on other’s post besides the topic, your views as well and I never once said I was be censored or arrested, why are you turning this into internet drama.
I believe I have stated verifable facts if you care to look. As for opinions I made they are of course my own, but unlike you and mikeb, you seem to believe your opinions are fact. Since you seem so frustrated by someone who won’t drink the left wing kool-aid I’m under the assumption that is why you must call a person you have never met “stupid” just because they don’t agree with you (I guess I could be wrong)
Remember the old saying about winning reboot, “Arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics, even if you win, you’re still retarded.”
As a foreigner who doesn’t really care about which ism and schism you Americans attach yourselves to, I will give my opinion:
I might go to the library and take out a book about bombs, and Islam, and whatever. I am probably doing this because it’s what’s in the news and I have an intellectual curiosity. Right now I have a book about Portuguese colonialism on my desk and it’s not because I’m planning to invade Sri Lanka. I also have a copy of Tess of the D’urbervilles but I’m not planning to get raped by some rich dude and have a baby.
You americans, in addition to all the other freedoms you have lost, have now lost the freedom to learn. Even something as generally harmless but incredibly important as the public reading has become too frightening for your plutocrats. Your nobility has become the same sort of misanthropic monsters your forefathers so detested.
I feel nothing but pity and shame for your country.
Oh, I forgot to add: you people are on a sinking ship, and you can’t fix the leaks because you’re too busy name-calling each other ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ like a bunch of fucking four year olds. I suppose a population of children doesn’t deserve the same freedoms as adults, so you have no one to blame but yourselves.
I am a conservative with some things. For instance, the American Pledge of Allegience. The original version went something like this…
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty, Justice, and Equality for all.”
The “under God” addition was something that an activist Congressman added in 1954 during the beginning of the cold war when America was trying to unify and identify itself against the Red Enemy. Now that the communist threat is over, and religion is more of a divider than a unifier, we need to strike those two words from the pledge. And we should look to bring the word equality back into the pledge. That word was omitted because of the general consensus that blacks and women were not equal to white men. We now have Constitutional Amendments and other Acts and laws that prove otherwise. So let’s bring back the original, unedited version of the American Pledge of Allegience.
If you’re British, you’ve got no fucking room to talk about lost liberties. I’ve lived abroad for the last 6 years, and the biggest thing I’ve learned is that people are more similar than they are different no matter where you go. So when I hear some ignorant foreigner trash-talking my country, it pisses me off as much as it would if someone else were to do it to you. So whatever country you’re from, you have your rubes, rednecks and hicks just like us; yours just aren’t as public.
I’m not British, actually. I am an American citizen though, and lived there for quite a bit of my life. Less than half, though.
Never said nothing bout rubes, rednecks and hicks, though I’m not that kind of person: I’m townfolk myself. I was talking about old money. Sons of sons of sons of the rich.
After having lived in big-city Florida, rural Ohio, San Francisco and Washington State I gotta say Rural Ohio had the people whose company I enjoyed the most. Salt-of-the-earth types are America’s least problem.
Yes, it’s wonderful when people love to take all the advantages of Westernized culture so they can go back to the third world hell holes they or their families are from originally and then make snide comments on the internet about the country (or countries) that they personally benefitted so much from.
Not that I’m suggesting anyone here does that….frequently.
Well, if we’re going down that line of reasoning, my ancestors (meaning ‘grandparents or greatgrandparents’) were mostly from Italy, Germany and Poland, which I take to be “westernized”. Actually I’m pretty sure Italians pretty much invented and propagated Western Culture to the point that our very alphabet is named after Lazio. I’m also not sure how Brazil isn’t western but I moved when I was three: It was out of my hands.
I will say that it is typical of those who have nothing to say and little confidence to go immediately to insulting race and nationality, and typical of the coward to march in line, Gor and Garbled. America is in good hands.
I apologize if I came off a little vitrolic. I guess I get a bit mussed when I see “foreigner”, “you Americans”, and a bunch of insults thrown together. I agree with the salt of the earth statement. The old money types don’t care about the troubles of the common man; they only see politics as a tool of manipulation (both Democrats and Republicans) to bend our will to theirs. To make us think that keeping them rich is in our best interests.
But it’s important for commoners like ourselves to recognize this trap for what it is, and not fall victim to the infighting that so easy happens when we believe these lies. If their not going to be honest with us, I would at least like our politicians to not patronize us or insult our intelligence.
@... Tony
If you’re British … when I hear some ignorant foreigner trash-talking my country, it pisses me off as much as it would if someone else were to do it to you.
The british aren’t usually so precious about their country. Maybe it’s becuase they aren’t encouraged to pledge our love and devotion for a flag at every opportunity.
brits love their country as much as americans love theirs. they’re just not as vocal; its more of a deep-down lovey-dovey feeling. This was an Australian talking about British patriotism, hope you enjoyed it
I assume you quoted me because you want to pick apart my argument or because you don’t completely understand what I meant. The British have some of the most liberty infringing policies in order to “protect the people”. You can not go anywhere in London without your entire trip being documented on CCTV. This is not an insult, it is a statement of fact. Now, if I called all British people fascist, closet-racist, swill-beer making, shit-food eating, fucked up grill motherfuckers, that would be an insult. But I didn’t.
Look, I’m usually not overtly proud of my country. But it’s like when you’re having a family argument in your home and your neighbors decided to peek in the kitchen window and make remarks. Fuck off, I’ll see you at the next town hall meeting or whatever.
The flag of any nation is the symbol of the unity of that country. There is a difference between a balanced, thoughtful love of country and the society that builds it and blind worship of a flag. I was hoping that most of you could tell the difference.
Love should never be used in association with flags, anthems, and concepts you find written on propaganda posters. The soil, family, culture, yes, naturally, love is the right word. Everyone shares these things, unlike flags, anthems, and concepts you find written on propaganda posters.
“I will say that it is typical of those who have nothing to say and little confidence to go immediately to insulting race and nationality, and typical of the coward to march in line, Gor and Garbled. America is in good hands.”
When did I insult race or nationality?
When did I say I agreed about how certain governments are being run and that I “march in line” to their beat?
All I did was point out a pattern of behavior that has been repeatedly shown on this site by certain individuals. Individuals who have given out ample amounts of their own personal history/education/upbringing/attitude here on this site. Certainly enough for anyone with even a glimmer of insight to recognize guilt and a touch of self loathing with a healthy dose of an inferiority complex thrown in.
Oh, and accusing someone of being a coward when you don’t know a damn thing about them strikes me as being more the act of an angry, irrational person than any legitimate statement of fact. I’ve been in situations that would probably have you soiling yourself, so think again before lamely attempting to paint a yellow stripe down my back.
Lashing out with baseless, reactionary acusations of racism just further proves my point. Thanks for playing.
P.S. America is NOT in good hands, it’s in trouble. I’m glad I don’t live there.
Garbled, shut the fuck up. I made a point, and even though I said “you americans” if you actually read my posts you would know I had nothing against Americans. If you generally payed attention to anything I say you’d know I love America but hate the politicians: just like a lot of Americans which gor similarly called ‘liberal’ as if it were a slur.
What you said was “You’re wrong because you are not from a western (which in your mind clearly means white) country”.
It would have been less racist to call me spic. But if you want to accuse me of reactionary anti-intellectualism I believe that is ‘ad hominem’ homes.
Don’t you accuse me of anti-intellectualism. Everyone on this thread except you and Gor have been making substantial, informed posts expressing opinions, and you and Gor have done nothing but slander everyone without backing up your opinions. You two are the exact kind of bigots I was talking about.
Wow, Ciao, good to see that self delusion is alive and well.
Far from having nothing against Americans, your own words show what a liar you are. You’ve made dozens of posts on this site about how stupid, lazy, inept, uneducated, fat, unmotivated, uninformed, racist, cruel and evil Americans are. Not just politicians, average ordinary Americans. You take every opportunity you can to slag America, it’s values, it’s people and it’s way of life, then turn around and say “but I lived there and went to school there so it’s OK.” Then play the race/liberal card and cry “boo hoo, what did I say? ” Then you freak out and attack anyone who comments on your behavior, citing all the indignities and injustices you and your family have suffered as if it somehow mitigates your reprehensible behavior. You are also a huge fan of the “accuse people of making statements they didn’t make” tactic. Something I’ve always found to be one of your least admirable attributes on this site.
I never said you were wrong. All I did was point out your repeated and increasingly pedantic and predictable behavior patterns. I certainly don’t believe that where someone comes from determines whether they are capable of an informed position. Your false interpretation of my statement speaks volumes of your own biases and personal issues rather than any prejudices you perceive that I hold. The only thing I really accused you of in my original post was hypocrisy. I find the fact that you somehow misconstrued it as anti-intellectualism laughable at best. Yet you took a statement I made about YOU specifically and twisted it into that I’m some kind of goosestepping bigoted facist who hates all people who aren’t from the West. And by the way, not everyone in this thread has been making substantial, informed posts. If you want that, you’re at the wrong site. Yet another example of you twisting the truth to fit YOUR desires and perceptions, and your almost pathological need to be right as well as righteous.
Oh, and how do you know what race or country I belong to? Have you hired a detective, stalked me or consulted a psychic? I’ve certainly never given you any personal information. You know nothing about me, who I am, where I am from or what I believe. For you to accuse me of bigotry is as hilarious as it is ignorant. (Almost as funny as assuming I was white.)
You have a real problem with misplaced anger and guilt. Not to mention some serious childhood issues that you need to resolve. The obvious level of indignant outrage in your last post just proves it further. I hope the best for you man, get help.
Nope, quantifying the stupidity of statements is a hobby of mine.
With you’re posts its more like a Where’s Waldo?: “can you spot all 5 logical fallacies in garbled’s reasoning?”
I, at least, appreciated the effort, reboot. I was going in the cybernetic hunter-killer direction, but that path, too, was ignored. Politics – it’s all fun and games until somebody actually tries it.
But reboot, the propaganda poster style (and a very ugly one at that) just isn’t sexy at all. Which is saying something in the case of the material – huge potential there.
The hypocracy of your statements cracks me up Reboot. Between you and Ciao, the two of you have posted more worthless words on this site than everyone else put together. Which makes the two of you lovebirds the biggest douches of all time. Yay! You win! Good for you! Now you can move to SF and smell your own farts.
Plus you can’t even use the word YOUR in the right context. So who is the rtard here?
Can you spot all the avoidance of the FACTS in the posts by Reboot and Ciao? Or should we continue to live in the world of complete buttfuckery that the two of you have concocted together? You seem to be happy enough living in that world where you are the so called genius of quantum chemistry who really is the dorky IT guy that bones the Asian girl, and Ciao is the expert historian that works as an overrated travel guide to pay the bills.
Wow, I am soooo jealous of the two of your pathetic asses.
Keep pretending to be the academics of the website. I find the both of you as entertaining as you are pathetic.
Remember kids, no matter where you go, there are the douches.
Plus, Reboot, considering what an anal retentive obsessive compulsive little turdnugget you’ve shown yourself to be here maybe you should just do us all a favor and set yourself on fire.
As much as I find him to be a self hating pedantic dilletante, at least Ciao seems to have a sense of humor. As for you, well, you’re the kind of guy that would have pointed out that Jesus’ nails were driven in at the improper angle to avoid slippage and that the centurion in charge wouldn’t like that so you’d better fix it.
Assclown.
You haven’t convinced me, Garbled, because your troll no matter how well it illustrates *your* point, was still a set-up and from your position of being the Man Behind the Curtain, you can’t lose – but nor can you win.
Unless you are prepared to give details about where you are in the world, your background, and such, the superiority trip you’re on is at best self-indulgent wankery which teaches no lesson of any value, and at worst pure cowardice.
“Yes, it’s wonderful when people love to take all the advantages of Westernized culture so they can go back to the third world hell holes they or their families are from originally and then make snide comments on the internet about the country (or countries) that they personally benefitted so much from.

^ Neon-flashing passive-aggressive troll (as you later admited). Bravo.
Christ, go away for a few days and it seems everybody gets their panties in a bunch. Most people with extreme views are either posers or just exaggerate their views to make a point. I suspect many commenters are just pimply faced sexually retarded adolences, especially those that disagree with me.
Based on the time stamps between garbled’s last two posts, it took him 14 minutes to type 96 words (assuming he wasn’t just paralyzed with rage for 14 minutes).
Extrapolating from that, garbled, has wasted over two and half hours of his pitiful life on this thread. The only thing sadder than that is the notebook he apparently keeps about other commenters on this site. The whole thing just screams, “I pay attention to you guys. Why don’t you pay attention to mEEEEE! *sob* I’m so alone.”
Full disclosure: it took 6 minutes to type this
Librarian tried to a chair is pretty hot.

dammit.
Only if you spend way too much time in libraries.
So, am I to understand that the Patriot Act’s invasion of privacy is perpetrated by Terminators poorly disguised as a Revolutionary War soldiers?
Yes, exactly. So if you ever meet Arnold Schwarzenegger in such a costume, you know what’s going on.

You’re wrong. A Federal Court struck down the National Security Letter provisions (which includes the library records search provisions) of the Patriot Act as unconstitutional.

I was checking whether that was an insult because liberal (deriving from the latin for ‘free’) and progressive (progress is good) are both characteristics that I’m proud of.

I don’t have a problem discussing politics with anyone who is rational.
As such, I have yet to get into a political discussion with any conservative-leaning member of this site.
Paul Revere was a Cyberdyne Systems model 101? History is obviously taught differently from when I was in school.
This poster does make one thing perfectly clear, though: the machines win.
I’m completely fine with it.
I’ve got nothing to hide.

4th Amendment to the US Constitution:

Its funny ’cause your president ignores the constitution, so it doesn’t mean anything anymore. Ha ha!

The right to suck it.

You two are the exact kind of bigots I was talking about.
Anyone who disagrees with the Patriot act is a muslim atheist gay mormon communist nazi.
Maybe you should take your own advice, and “shut the fuck up”.
Word count in this thread,
Caio: 539
garbledxmission: 757
You are not in any position to tell someone to STFP.
*STFU
dammit
You’re right: You have never posted any information about yourself on this site. I have and got trolled for it.
You win, garbled.
What a surprise, Reboot rushes to Ciao’s defence.
Does he give you a reach around when he fucks you?
Was that few enough words for you?
Nope, quantifying the stupidity of statements is a hobby of mine.
With you’re posts its more like a Where’s Waldo?: “can you spot all 5 logical fallacies in garbled’s reasoning?”
44 posts and completely unrelated to the actual post. This is why I love MCS.
It’s a shame, I was really trying to start this off as an S&M librarian fetish thread.
Find a sexy propaganda poster and prove me wrong.
**Not that I’m suggesting anyone here does that….frequently.”**
^ Neon-flashing passive-aggressive troll (as you later admited). Bravo.
Garbled I think you have gone paranoid insane on this thread. That is the creepiest, most-obsessive thing I have ever seen written on the internet.
I think you know more about me than my father, creep. Have you been combing every post and taking notes?
Dudes if I stop posting or something, call the Kootenay mounties for the late me will ya?
This thread would be better served in the Flaming forum.
The sexual angle’s quite disturbing. I just read the PETA thread and wonder at the guy making everything about you fucking, Caio.
Sure, Kootenay Mounties, no worries.
Well in all fairness I am pretty fuckable.
I mean I can’t blame people for fantasizing just as long as they keep it inside their crazy brains. That’s all I’m saying.
Aye, can’t blame poor garbled, ‘strue.
