Yes it was an insult, good of you to catch it. The constitutional protection is for “personal” papers in the home (or such as a car) NOT in a PUBLIC library. But I guess it’s more important that PUBLIC library information is more important that saving the lives of children. (I using the progressive’s normal reasoning for all their issues in my argument, isn’t that cute?)

You’re wrong. A Federal Court struck down the National Security Letter provisions (which includes the library records search provisions) of the Patriot Act as unconstitutional.

Since we have so many whacked-out federal court judge I don’t doubt stupid decisions. Stupid judges make stupid decisions alot, like giving children to proven child molesters and making illegal the Pledge of Allegience. Hell, the US Supreme Court said that the local government can seize your home and give it developers (where’s your protection there?).
Also, since the great evil threat of protecting our children by not allowing public library records to be reviewed was overturned than the system worked and liberty saved.

By nature, libraries don’t keep records of who has checked out a book after the book has been returned, which does cause some ire on our end, but the keeping of records goes against the philosophy of the library. It’s open information for everyone; honestly, I could care less about what stuff you are looking up and your reasons for it, for the most part I am happy you are exercizing your natural right to think freely.
If the Feds came to my library today we could not tell them who checked out what, since we don’t even keep track of that stuff via a computer system or anything. You request it, we bring it to you then we take it back when you are done. Of course, I work in a special collections library, but when I worked for a regular library the same thing applied. Maybe circulation system administrator has access to records, but the librarians at the circulation desk doesn’t.
And for the record, the ALA was against the Patriot Act.

I might go to the library and take out a book about bombs, and Islam, and whatever. I am probably doing this because it’s what’s in the news and I have an intellectual curiosity. Right now I have a book about Portuguese colonialism on my desk and it’s not because I’m planning to invade Sri Lanka. I also have a copy of Tess of the D’urbervilles but I’m not planning to get raped by some rich dude and have a baby.
You americans, in addition to all the other freedoms you have lost, have now lost the freedom to learn. Even something as generally harmless but incredibly important as the public reading has become too frightening for your plutocrats. Your nobility has become the same sort of misanthropic monsters your forefathers so detested.

I am a conservative with some things. For instance, the American Pledge of Allegience. The original version went something like this…
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty, Justice, and Equality for all.”
The “under God” addition was something that an activist Congressman added in 1954 during the beginning of the cold war when America was trying to unify and identify itself against the Red Enemy. Now that the communist threat is over, and religion is more of a divider than a unifier, we need to strike those two words from the pledge. And we should look to bring the word equality back into the pledge. That word was omitted because of the general consensus that blacks and women were not equal to white men. We now have Constitutional Amendments and other Acts and laws that prove otherwise. So let’s bring back the original, unedited version of the American Pledge of Allegience.

I’ve lived abroad for the last 6 years, and the biggest thing I’ve learned is that people are more similar than they are different no matter where you go. So when I hear some ignorant foreigner trash-talking my country, it pisses me off as much as it would if someone else were to do it to you. Well, if we’re going down that line of reasoning, my ancestors (meaning ‘grandparents or greatgrandparents’) were mostly from Italy, Germany and Poland, which I take to be “westernized”. Actually I’m pretty sure Italians pretty much invented and propagated Western Culture to the point that our very alphabet is named after Lazio. I’m also not sure how Brazil isn’t western but I moved when I was three: It was out of my hands.
I will say that it is typical of those who have nothing to say and little confidence to go immediately to insulting race and nationality, and typical of the coward to march in line, Gor and Garbled. America is in good hands.

I apologize if I came off a little vitrolic. I guess I get a bit mussed when I see “foreigner”, “you Americans”, and a bunch of insults thrown together. I agree with the salt of the earth statement. The old money types don’t care about the troubles of the common man; they only see politics as a tool of manipulation (both Democrats and Republicans) to bend our will to theirs. To make us think that keeping them rich is in our best interests.
But it’s important for commoners like ourselves to recognize this trap for what it is, and not fall victim to the infighting that so easy happens when we believe these lies. If their not going to be honest with us, I would at least like our politicians to not patronize us or insult our intelligence.

All I did was point out a pattern of behavior that has been repeatedly shown on this site by certain individuals. Individuals who have given out ample amounts of their own personal history/education/upbringing/attitude here on this site. Certainly enough for anyone with even a glimmer of insight to recognize guilt and a touch of self loathing with a healthy dose of an inferiority complex thrown in.
Oh, and accusing someone of being a coward when you don’t know a damn thing about them strikes me as being more the act of an angry, irrational person than any legitimate statement of fact. I’ve been in situations that would probably have you soiling yourself, so think again before lamely attempting to paint a yellow stripe down my back.
