It is in fact koi, which actually just means carp. Nishikigoi is the proper term, which means brocaded carp, but nobody uses that.
Yeah, but the ‘-goi’ in ‘nishikigoi’ is just a variant on ‘koi’ following a common voicing rule in japanese, nishigi meaning ‘tapestry’ or something like that. That’s kind of like saying that ‘goldfish’ is something distinctly different from ‘fish’.
