you can sit still in your little chair there, and still be moving along at a great amount of speed as the earth rotates and goes around the sun. nothing in the universe is at rest…
and how exactly would you travel through space without time?
“you can sit still in your little chair there, and still be moving along at a great amount of speed as the earth rotates and goes around the sun. nothing in the universe is at rest…”
you can’t really talk about traveling through space-time without a frame a reference. It would be equally valid to say that me and my little chair are stationary and the rest of the universe is traveling around me.
“and how exactly would you travel through space without time?”
If you were to travel at the speed of light, then you would be traveling through space, but not time, from the point of view of an external frame of reference.
Although I don’t think its what he meant, LukeV1-5 is technically correct. The best kind of correct.
if your little chair is stationary, then that would effectively make the earth the center of the universe. even then, parts of you would still be moving through space.
also, if you traveled at the speed of light and appeared to an outside observor to not be traveling through time, you would still appear to be traveling through time in your own frame of reference. not moving through time would only be an optical illusion.
“if your little chair is stationary, then that would effectively make the earth the center of the universe.”
No it would make my little chair the center of the universe and the earth would be revolving around me.
“even then, parts of you would still be moving through space.”
relative to what?
“also, if you traveled at the speed of light and appeared to an outside observor to not be traveling through time, you would still appear to be traveling through time in your own frame of reference. not moving through time would only be an optical illusion.”
Wrong. Look up the Twin Paradox.
You could respond with the technicality that no matter can travel at the speed of light so you would still travel through time, just very slowing. We could however get arbitrarily close.
“you would be moving through space relative to the rest of the universe.”
No the rest of the universe would be moving relative to me. There is no absolute frame of reference. You’re free to choose any coordinate system that conserves all observables.
“and what does the twin paradox have to do with it?”
Special Relativity. Time dilation. Time is slowed by the reciprocal of the Lorentz factor. epsilon = sqrt(1-v^2/c^2). Set v=c and time stops. Like I said, look it up.
Check out the Civil War- the Thunderbolts. Baron Von Zemo uses the infinity gems to move thru both time and space…it sorta explains what reboot is on about.
The Infinity Guantlet comic series with that bitch Thanos is like my fave of all times.
great post!
Time.
Controlling time has such great potential…
Mind. magic powers ftw!
Time because after an unlimited amount of it, you’ll pick up the rest.
HEART!
Reality. GTFOLOLOKTHXBAILOL.
actually, space and time are not separate. it’s one thing: Spacetime.
you can’t be somewhere (where you are in space) without being somewhen (where you are in time)
and you can’t be somewhen with out being somewhere.
spacetime is curved and gravity affects it;
fat people curve spacetime more than skinny people.
But you can travel through time without travelling through space. And travel through space without travelling through time.
@Luke:
um, no you can’t.

LOL PHYSICS!

Reboot is correct.
@The Matrix: Rebooted:
