It’s a pity this never made it to production. It could potentially have been the worlds first nuclear powered aircraft. And THAT, would have been totally awesome… 😀
Phyreblade, the xb-70 was nuclear armed, but had conventional propulsion.
If I recall correctly, only two nuclear powered aircraft engines were every built in the US and both of those are still sitting on the ground in the Arco, ID. In fact, I think there was a picture of them a few weeks ago on MCS.
BTW anyone interested in nuclear aircraft and spacecraft should read Project Orion by George Dyson (son of Freeman Dyson). It almost make cry to think how awesome nuclear rockets would be.
it’s the same air intakes as the concorde. it’s advanced conventional, definitely not nuclear.
and as far as nuclear armed, any of the current B-series bombers can carry a nuclear payload. a B-52 crashed in SC in the 60s carrying an atomic weapon. it didn’t go off, obviously.
