It’s a German encryption device that whenever you key in a letter, a light comes on that corresponds to that letter, which is either written down by hand, or the letter that is “lit up” is actually printed via a typewriter (I forget which).
It was used during WWII, and was quite effective as encryption, because eachtime a key was pressed, the system would reset the light system accordingly, making it (for all intents and purposes) impossible to crack.
