Wait, when has war ENDED communism. I thought it tended to create it (russian in wwii, china in their revolutionary war, north korea in the korean war, etc).

Yeah, but they never fighted against those things, they where just side-effecs.
Actually, Russia became Communist in WWI. North Korea became Communist before the Korean War. And, if you are inclined to believe Osama bin Laden, the Russian invasion of Afghanistan caused the fall of the Soviet Union.
Oops, typo. Of course it was WWI, 1917 I believe. They were led by John Lennon, right? And Richard Trotsky?
Slavery still exists, even in the US.
Fascism is more common than ever.
Nazism was a combination of racism and fascism. Both still exist.

it ended legal slavery. of course other political systems exist, but war’s changed the power in many other countries, whether for better or for worse.
When you look at it though, the Gulf war really served to end the Soviet Union and the Cold War.
The USSR saw our stealth technology, and realized that they simply did not have enough economic power to duplicate, let alone defend against, our technology.
And yes, though communism may still exist, its on the way out. Once the USSR fell, many communist countries that depended on it fell or were crippled as well. For example- Cuba depended on about 5 Billion dollars per year from the USSR, and when Gorbachev said “No more”, Cuba fell into a horrible state. Even China is gradually phazing out communist economic ideals for free-market systems (to avoid the problems Russia came upon when it tried to change over nearly overnight).
To believe that war is not neccesary is idealistic and stupid, A world without wars is a great vision, but people just aren’t good enough for it to work. You can talk all you want, but sanctions and threats are worthless from stopping dictators and governments who don’t care about their people. Sometimes, you need to use force to enact a demand, words just don’t cut it.
I hate to use a cliche, but look at Iraq. While the US and the UN were repeatedly demanding throughout the ’90s and into the new millenium for Hussein to allow weapons inspectors into all Iraqi sites, Hussein stalled, denied access, and might as well have said “Weapons of mass destruction? noooooo, I don’t have ANY of those, especially not in those sites into which I won’t let inspectors.”
During all this stalling, who knows what he may have done? its possible that we can’t find any WMD’s because he had several months in which he could have hidden them while the UN was making resolutions upon resolutions.
I’m not emaning to attack anyone’s beliefs, I’m simply submitting this as another viewpoint. since MCS tends to be very liberal.
People still find planes buried in the deserts in Iraq.
It would have taken less than a day to send all nuclear weapons back to Russia (where they bought everything aside from the yellow cake Uranium).
Bah.
War solves everything. It’s the definition that needs to be understood to mean conflict and this world doesn’t exist or evolve without conflict.
Protesting any war is naive and stupid. But at least you’re allowed to protest without a tank running you over.

I am not saying that war is never justified, I am saying that 90% of wars do nothing other than get poor people killed and make rich people richer.
I have to cynically agree with mAgnUS, “Protesting any war is naive and stupid.” Protesting has never really accomplished much.

A little advice about history. Don’t just *think about* what the logical event would be and then assume it’s true. Crack a book. There have been volumes written on the USSR’s dramatic economic decline. For years, the people had been going long stretches of time without basic items such as food and soap. Long tomes have been written about how Gorbachev’s reforms strengthened the various puppet governments, many of which spontaneously declared independence, completely destroying the planned economy which had been depended on these Soviets from Stalin’s day, and making it virtually possible to address the problems militarily.
But yeah, I’m sure that was it and none of that other stuff mattered. The Russians saw a picture of the B-2 Spirit – which turned out to be the Gulf War’s biggest publicity blunder, as it didn’t work yet and didn’t end up being used at the time – and they threw up their hands in the air and screamed “That’s it! That plane that doesn’t do anything yet just looks *way too cool*! Let’s give up on this whole communism thing!”
As for fascism, nazism and slavery: Well, I think this overlooks the main reason for being against the current wars. Who started all these wars, just out of curiosity?
This image is already sort-of Godwin’s lawish, so what the fuck: As Eisenhower, the *Republican* president who did a lot to define American strategy during WWII and who was well known for fighting the coldwar diplomatically and winning, and making America the world’s most powerful nation in the process said:

If Eisenhower went in with guns-a-blazing in the fifties, I don’t know what would have happened, but America would *not* currently be a superpower.
Lets put it this way, War doesn’t solve anything except Violence.
