While many newer Mario games have come out with far better graphics and new gameplay, the old side scrolling 2D format is still quite captivating. Various players have created over a hundred totally new Mario games based on the SMW engine, with new ones still being published. Some of these new games even borrow sprites and elements from other Mario games on the SNES. 

Without the internet, none of these advancements would be possible. It’s allowed players to share their great creations with others all over the world.

Guides for games are nothing new. It used to be that popular games would have guides that would appear in a magazine or had a stand alone version that could be purchased. The internet has changed all of that, though. 

Video walkthroughs have made figuring your way around difficult spots in a game far simpler. Youtube is full of playthroughs of all kinds of games. In some cases, you can already find them before the game is even officially released. 

While reading a written guide can certainly be helpful, nothing beats seeing things play out on video. For games with complex levels, puzzles or other challenges, these have proved to be invaluable. As video games technology has improved, the complexity of games has also gone up significantly.

“Borderlands” Review

Borderlands: Directed by Eli Roth. With Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramírez, Jamie Lee Curtis. Based on the best-selling videogame, this all-star action-adventure follows a ragtag team of misfits on a mission to save a missing girl who holds the key to unimaginable power.

The internet seems to think that this is the worst movie in the world, but it doesn’t rise to the terrible results of other video game adaptations and has it’s own share of great moments, but at the end of the day it’s not terrible, not great, just mediocre. I think my complaint with it would be the casting and the decision to set it nearly 40 years after the time period of the first video game, but somehow not have any of the events of the games referenced to or occur on the screen. It’s a movie set in a mirror Borderlands universe where the main characters are older and Kevin Hart plays a soldier that’s not all that funny. He’s not even trying to be funny, he’s just playing a soldier, that’s it. One of the funniest guys in Hollywood and they have him playing a bbf to Ariana Greenblatt’s Tiny Tina, who really stole the show but wasn’t given enough to work with to save the film.

Do you need to see it in theaters? no, but I’d suggest checking it out when it hits the FAST channels.

Happy birthday to Robert Greenberger!

A writer, editor, and project manager, Robert Greenberger has been working in publishing since 1980. A lifelong fan of comics and science fiction, he watched dreams become reality when he first joined Starlog Press in 1980. There, he created Comics Scene which he edited during its initial run. In 1984, he moved to DC Comics where he worked as an editor or administrator until 2000, earning plaudits for his work on the Star Trek comic book. After a brief sojourn to the Internet, he returned to comics in 2001, this time working as an executive at Marvel Comics. This turned out to be a stormy, frustrating year and in 2002 he returned to DC as a senior editor in their growing collected editions department. In 2006, he left DC and found himself having the time of his life as Managing Editor at Weekly World News unitl its clueless management shuttered the paper.

Since then he has been a freelance writer, working on media tie-in properties, original fiction, non-fiction for your young adults and adults, and whatever else has come his way. He has cofounded the digital Crazy 8 Press.

He currently teaches high school English and Creative Writing in Baltimore County.

Gahana is still played by Tom Kennedy, but he’s one of the few returning actors, as both Torchy and McBride have new feet in those shoes. It took me a while to warm up to both of them, but I eventually got over myself and settled in for another classic Torchy tale. They figure out that the bank robber is going to be heading to Panama via the Panama Canal (and boat ‘natch), so McBride and Gahagan book tickets on the same boat, leaving Torchy in the lurch. She figures that she’s just as entitled as anyone to be on that boat, but as it’s already left the dock, she hires an airplane and parachutes into the immediate vicinity of the cruise liner, causing them to fish her out of the water. Hijinks ensue, and with the help of Galagan, they find the guy that doesn’t belong on the boat. There’s a couple attempted murders, a couple shootings, and some pajamas that I swear to god are completely see through on Lola Lane when she falls into a waterfountain, but I can’t find much about that situation on the internet, more because 1 – there was no internet when this originally came out, and 2 – there’s an active adult entertainer that seems to have taken over any kind of “Lola Lane” searches on both Google and Bing.

It’s a perfectly fine movie, but I do dearly miss Glenda Farrall in the role. I’m not sure if it’s different writing or just different delivery, but lines that used to feel like playful banter now feel mean spirited, with the main leads calling each other idiots or morons at various times. I was happy to see Gahagan’s terrible poetry show up at the very end!

MCS and Trolling and Bans of Different Colors

I’ve read a book recently that was named “The Internet of Garbage” with the first chapter named “The Internet IS Garbage” and to that point the author went into detail of how communities go astray from their purpose and what it means to properly build them into something nicer than what happens to unmoderated shit holes like 4chan.

To that end, I’m immediately implementing some rules on MCS:

1 – no obviously trolling.  if you’re saying something that’s obscene just to get a rise out of people you’ll get thrown into The System.

2 – no personal attacks.  ok: “I think that politician is a piece of shit whore”; not ok: “Tiki, you’re a fucking piece of shit whore”.  breaking this rule will get you thrown into The System

I think that’s it, but as with anything on MCS, it’s going to be imperfect and will need to fixed a few times before it gets better.

Oh, you say to yourself, but Tiki, what is “The System“? Right now it’s a multitiered laying algorithm that I’m manually running (read: clicking one box) and then manually unclicking the button when it’s time for your return.  During the time that you’re in The System, you’ll be unable to log into the site, unable to submit content, and unable to submit comments.

I’m open to suggestions, but at the end of the day I’m tired of negativity and fake news showing up on the site, so I’m going to be blocking all that stuff from the front page too.
