    Songbird

Songbird: Directed by Adam Mason. With K.J. Apa, Sofia Carson, Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford. In 2024 a pandemic ravages the world and its cities. Centering on a handful of people as they navigate the obstacles currently hindering society: disease, martial law, quarantine, and vigilantes.

Per wikipedia, the film was conceived of, written, produced, filmed, and released all within a few months of the global covid-19 pandemic breaking national borders and infecting hundreds of millions and killing millions of those that were unable to fight off the infection. The movie feels as crass as you would expect, with a barebones story of an immune man trying to save his presumably immune girlfriend from the corrupt government that’s forcing all the non-immune people into a “Q-Zone” where they’re presumably living great lives, just like your dog that went upstate to the farm. Most of the action beats aren’t very good and the finale is just rubbish, but I’m happy to have been able to see this, just to tell you that you shouldn’t.

    TRON Uprising

Created by Steven Lisberger, Bonnie MacBird. With Elijah Wood, Tricia Helfer, Charlie Bean, Elizabeth Ho. In the computer world of the Grid, a young program joins Tron’s fight against their world’s tyranny.

The last bit of Tron I can get from Disney+, I’m still sad that this ended on a cliffhanger and there hasn’t been any follow up at all. There’s some heavy hitting VO work here and some damn good special effects.

If you’re a Tron fan, you owe yourself a few hours to check this out, just be aware that the Disney+ version omits the first episode for some stupid reason.

    Space Precinct review

    81hO5Qtv1rL. SL1500 726x1024 Space Precinct

From sci-fi legend Gerry Anderson (Space 1999, Thunderbirds, UFO), this special-effects-filled series chronicles the adventures of two cops from Earth battling a rogue’s gallery of alien criminals in the year 2040. Transferred from the mean-streets of New York City to a teeming alien planet halfway across the galaxy, veteran police detective Patrick Brogan (Ted Shackelford, Dallas) and his rookie partner (Rob Youngblood, NYPD Blue, Sliders) struggle to adapt to their exotic new beat. Tangling with otherworldly outlaws in one deadly close encounter after another, the officers fight to bring intergalactic law and order to a mind-bending realm where the bad guy’s aren’t just bad… they aren’t even human!

I haven’t finished this series, but wanted to write my thoughts down. I’ve read that this series never found an audience in the US, as the US broadcasters couldn’t figure out what to do with a series that had cartoonish makeup and prosthetics but serious storylines that might not speak to a younger audience.  I agree that there’s a huge gap between the sets and miniatures vs the storylines.  Speaking of the miniatures, it wasn’t until I grabbed the Amazon description that I realized why they looked so familiar to me, they definitely feel like a more serious version of Thunderbirds.

It’s worth checking out, the first episode is a great one and it’s currently streaming with Amazon Prime.
