I watched the recent remake. It angered me.
Why did the world get saved? Because of the pathetic kid?? I can accept the all powerful aliens, I can accept the nano-bot plague of locust, but saving the world because of a mother loving the pathetic asshole kid of her dead husband???
If I was an alien, that asshole kid would be the first to die. Immediately followed by any writer associated with that steaming pile of shit they used as a script.

I actually enjoyed the remake. But only because of Keanu. I could stare at that man for days, and yes I’m ashamed for it.
Otherwise, it wasn’t that good. At least most people are aware that the original is superior to the remake, and that the remake exists only because of greedy, unimaginative people.
And yeah I would have killed them all too.
I hope Reeves’ dreamboatyness doesn’t blind you to his horrible acting, dieA.
I am also of the opinion that the original was genius, and the remake was terrible.
I never said he was a good actor. Just that I like to look at him.
And The Matrix has a special place in my heart, sadly I’m also silly loyal.
This movie is full of American propaganda, especially when the alien gives his speech at the end. I did not enjoy it.
The remake could have been good if it didn’t try to be all sentimental, it was as bad as the original, but fron other points of view.

Portraying how primitive people are, because they’re afraid if they don’t take advantage of whatever information is available, their neighbour might do it and use it against them. Another way to put it, if we don’t get the the big guns and massive missiles, our neighbour might do it and we’re doomed.
If you don’t like the execution of the film, well that’s too bad. But it can be hardly considered propaganda. It’s very real.

WarGames is a movie that does exactly what you said The Day The Earth Stood Still does.
“Profitable enterprises” doesn’t necessary mean to make money, it can mean many things, to include advancement in technology.
Also, the alien didn’t say we had to stop being violent, only that if humans continued on being violent we would eventually produce a weapon so dangerous that we would become a danger to them, and that was something they could not tolerate.

There is no contradiction, just a warning. We could do whatever we like, but if we continued on the path of weapon development we would eventually discover a weapon so hideous that they would be forced to remove the threat we would pose.
That’s not doing whatever we want, that’s conditioning.

I see what you mean now. Well I didn’t think that’s what it was about at all. To me the film doesn’t revolve around that aspect. It was about human behaviour. That threat was just a way of showing how ugly we can be, as in trying to force him to tell only us what information he has rather than all leaders at once, and then the asshole kid and the woman.

I just watched the remake. It was kind of boring but the effects were nice.
The alien said that the human race has to stop developing technology, not just weapons, because they are destroying the earth which is one of the few planets diverse enough to support life. Since humans can’t stop polluting all by themselves, they were forced to do so by the big brothers who roam the galaxies.
I just didn’t understand why he gave the message to a single human so that no one else on the planet has an idea about what is happening. Not only that but did shutting everything off render oil useless too? I mean, if the whole planet doesn’t get the message than how will they know how to behave (as if they would… we humans are more likely to go “oh yeah? watch what we can do!)?

I recently watched this for the first time. It was wonderful. I had previously watched the remake, which I thought was good, but needed work. Strengthening of plot mainly. I didn’t think the acting was god awful, and it was nice to see Mr. Cleese.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t quite understand Latin. So wtf? Also, Romanian is a romance language, thus coming down from latin.
